Police in the northern Vietnamese province of Bac Ninh launched legal proceedings against six people on Wednesday for their alleged involvement in a football betting racket whose transactions accumulated more than VND1 trillion (US$40.33 million).

Officers under the Bac Ninh Department of Public Security coordinated with the Department of Cybersecurity and Hi-Tech Crime Prevention from the Ministry of Public Security to arrest Nguyen Duy Tung, 31, Tran Thi Thom, 52, Chu Van Ha, 32, Pham Van Manh, 44, Nguyen Van Anh, 53, and Nguyen Xuan Quynh, 40, on November 13.

They levied prosecution against the six suspects for their involvement in an online football betting ring that operated via the website and generated transactions totaling over VND1 trillion.

An initial police investigation into the ring identified that Nguyen Duy Tung began running the gambling racket at the beginning of this year, using a chief account himself and allocating subordinate accounts to several associatess who created member accounts for bettors.

A point on the website could be cashed out for between VND6,000 ($0.24) and VND100,000 ($4.03).

Officers confiscated 15 mobile phones, four cars, and several bank cards, documents, and other items relevant to the case during their investigation into the ring.

The web infrastructure of the gambling ring was sophisticated and allowed for anonymity, paving the way for a high-security operation, according to police.

Further investigation into the ring is underway.
