Vietnam Airport Ground Services Co. Ltd. (VIAGS), a subsidiary of flag carrier Vietnam Airlines, has suspended a wheelchair attendant, who made offensive comments on social media about passengers requiring wheelchair service, the Vietnam News Agency reported on Wednesday morning.

A representative of VIAGS said that the comments made by T.H.H.T., the special service attendant in question, on Facebook on Monday do not represent VIAGS’s principles and motto of passenger service.

“As if there is a wheelchair conference or something today that each flight has up to 4-5 passengers needing wheelchair service, [I] had to work my pants off, with no time for the toilet,” T., who works for VIAGS at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City, wrote on his personal Facebook account.

Many Facebook users expressed their disagreement over T.’s post, denouncing his statement as an inappropriate, disparaging remark about people with disabilities or weak health, who could not walk normally on their own.

After receiving many condemning comments, T. removed the Facebook post from his personal account.

Addressing the controversy, the VIAGS representative delivered an apology to the community for T.’s improper attitudes and perceptions about special passenger service.

The representative emphasized that serving people with disabilities or limited mobility is a regular service activity of VIAGS.

The company is always ready and has sufficient human resources, equipment and facilities to serve and regularly train employees on service processes and skills.

In addition, VIAGS has been requiring its employees to follow specific regulations for making statements on social media with regard to the company’s image and activities, the representative affirmed.

“The case has been rectified and strictly handled in accordance with the company’s labor regulations,” the representative said.

“The company has suspended T.H.H.T. from work and is considering applying disciplinary measures per our rules.”
