A court in Tien Giang Province, located in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region, sentenced a 37-year-old man to five years in prison on Tuesday for sexually abusing his 15-year-old niece.
The sentence was handed down to Nguyen Van Doi, 37, for the charge of “having sexual intercourse with people from 13 years old to under 16 years old.”
According to the indictment, Doi developed a desire to sexually abuse his niece, 15-year-old N.T.B.N., who lives about 100m from Doi’s house, at around 10:00 pm on October 5, 2020.
Doi walked to the back door of N.’s house and found the door was not locked, so he entered the house.
At that time, everyone in the house was fast asleep, and Doi went straight to N.’s bed, then carried her behind the house and sexually abused her.
He then went home to sleep.
Since then, Doi continued to sexually abuse N. many more times in her bed and near the canal in front of her house.
On February 25, 2022, N.’s mother saw that the girl’s belly was bigger than usual, so she took N. to a medical facility and found out that N. was 20 weeks pregnant.
N.’s family then made a report to the local police department.
During the investigation, police officer determined that Doi had sexually abused N.
On June 5, 2022, N. gave birth to a baby boy.
On June 21, 2022, the local police officers conducted a DNA test, whose result confirmed that N.’s newborn boy is Doi’s son.
Besides receiving the five-year jail sentence, Doi voluntarily agreed to compensate N. VND35 million (US$1,483) and gave her another VND90 million ($3,813) to support her baby.
