A three-year-old boy from Ca Mau Province, southernmost Vietnam was admitted to a hospital in Ho Chi Minh City last week after being attacked by a rabid dog that injured his face and lips and tore half of his tongue.
After receiving treatment at the Ho Chi Minh City-based hospital, T.N.D.K., 3, has regained stable health and has been allowed to return home, a local medical official in his hometown in Cai Nuoc District, Ca Mau said on Wednesday afternoon.
“Currently, K. has returned home, but we still need time to assess whether his language ability development is normal or not,” the medical official said.
According to initial information, while playing in front of his house, K. was suddenly attacked by a stray dog, which displayed symptoms of rabies, causing injuries to his face and lips and tearing half of his tongue.
Locals took K. to Cai Nuoc District Hospital for emergency treatment and rabies immunoglobulin injection while capturing the dog to take a sample for testing.
Doctors at Cai Nuoc District Hospital examined K. and determined that his wounds could lead to necrosis, so they advised his family to take the child to a hospital in Ho Chi Minh City for further treatment.
Meanwhile, test results showed that the dog that attacked K. was positive for rabies.
The Cai Nuoc authorities have declared a rabies situation and have initiated measures to disinfect the vicinity of the district, as well as vaccinate dogs and cats in the region against rabies.
