Rangers in Dong Nai Province, southern Vietnam arrested one man and are looking for another after the duo poached wild animals at Cat Tien National Park on Monday.
The rangers caught 39-year-old Huynh Van Bien and K’ Nhuan, both of whom are locals, red-handed poaching two chevrotains during their patrol at around 7:00 am that day.
The two chevrotains, weighing 3.4 kilograms each, were dead at the time.
The rangers also found two flashlights, a knife, a gun, 78 bullets, and more tools at the site.
They determined that Bien and K’ Nhuan violated regulations on forest animal protection and management of the use of weapons.
However, they could arrest only Bien, while K’Nhuan managed to escape.
The Cat Tien National Park forest protection department has called for K’ Nhuan to turn himself in to local authorities.
The chevrotain, also known as mouse-deer, is characterized by its small stature, spindly legs, and mouse-like head.
The species is classified as endangered, precious, and rare under Decree No. 06 issued by the Vietnamese government in 2019.
