Several sections of the Cam Lo-La Son Expressway, which connects Quang Tri and Thua Thien-Hue Provinces in central Vietnam, are undulating despite having opened just six months ago on December 31.
Several stretches of the 100-kilomter-long road have become wavy. Most of these undulating sections span 10 to 300 meters.
The expressway section running through Cam Hieu Commune in Cam Lo District, Quang Tri Province seems to be most affected.
Each 'wave' measures 3-5 centimeters in height and affects both lanes. A similar situation seems to be taking place in the section in Phong Dien District, Thua Thien-Hue Province.

Due to the situation, drivers often change lanes in order to travel the expressway. Pieces of damaged truck tires also liter the road.
Nguyen Mau Tai, a long-haul driver, said he was surprised at the undulation because the expressway had only recently opened to traffic.
“Expressways are designed to allow vehicles of all sizes to move fast. It is extremely dangerous if the roadway isn’t even,” Tai said.
“At slow speeds things might be okay, but accidents can happen when vehicles reach 80 kilometers per hour."

The Cam Lo-La Son Expressway is 98.3 kilometers long and runs from Cam Lo District, Quang Tri Province to Phu Loc District, Thua Thien-Hue Province where it meets up with the La Son-Tuy Loan expressway project.
The section in Quang Tri is 37.3 kilometers long, while the section in Thua Thien-Hue is 61 kilometers.
It is a sub-project of the North-South Expressway in the 2017-20 period.
The expressway has two lanes measuring a combined 12 meters wide and four lanes measuring a combined 23 meters wide in some sections.
The expressway cost nearly VND7.7 trillion (US$330.4 million).

The traffic safety board of Thua Thien-Hue Province has banned trucks weighing over 10 metric tons from traveling on the Cam Lo-La Son Expressway from Wednesday while it is under repair.
The restriction is meant to last until July 7.
The management board of the Ho Chi Minh Highway Project will place notification signs at the intersections of the Cam Lo-La Son Expressway with National Highway 1A, National Highway 9, and provincial road 14B.
Traffic police officers and traffic inspectors of Thua Thien-Hue Province will also support in the regulation of vehicles at the point leading to the Cam Lo-La Son Expressway.
