Watchdog results have shown that tea processors in Lam Dong Province, located in Vietnam’s Central Highlands region, did not use dyeing chemicals during their tea processing and production activities, the provincial Department of Industry and Trade affirmed on Monday.
The department submitted its results to the Lam Dong People’s Committee.
The Vietnamese Embassy in Pakistan and Afghanistan previously issued a telegram alleging that some firms in Lam Dong Province dyed tea green to attract consumers when exporting the product to the two nations.
As such, the provincial department asked five firms in the province to report their tea processing and production steps.
These tea processors were also required to list all chemicals used for their tea production.
In addition, the department dispatched an inspection team to these facilities to scrutinize the tea processing process.
The watchdog found no color additives were used to process and produce tea for domestic consumption and export at these firms.
Lam Dong Province, which boasts sought-after tourist destination Da Lat City, mainly exports green tea to Pakistan and Afghanistan, according to the provincial People’s Committee.
Since 2022, no shipments of tea to the two nations have been returned.
In 2022, Lam Dong exported some 4,670 metric tons of tea worth US$11.56 million to Taiwan, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.
The province shipped overseas 2,200 metric tons of tea valued at $5.3 million in the first five months of 2023, up over 38 percent in both volume and value year on year.
