The People’s Committee of Can Tho City in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region has decided to establish a management board to preserve and promote Cai Rang Floating Market, a national intangible cultural heritage site.
The management board is led by Nguyen Thuc Hien, vice-chairman of the municipal People’s Committee, according to an announcement released by the office of the Can Tho administration on Thursday.
As per the decision signed by chairman of Can Tho Tran Viet Truong, the board is in charge of implementing effective programs to conserve the floating market and promote its cultural value.
The board is responsible for consulting the municipal People’s Committee and competent agencies about the preservation.
Also, the board is tasked with asking designated agencies to impose sanctions on those who commit violations on floating market preservation.
Moreover, the board is told to send a report on its workload and plans to the Can Tho People’s Committee and the chairman every six months.
Cai Rang Floating Market, a popular destination in Can Tho City, is facing a risk of oblivion due to the development of road transport systems.
Besides, the city is building embankments along the two banks of the river, widening the gap between wharves and boats, which will escalate the submergence of the floating market.
The number of trading boats at Cai Rang Floating Market is on the decline, equivalent to 50-60 percent of the figure seen during the previous peak period, according to the Can Tho Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism.
