Surgeons at the Ho Chi Minh City Hospital for Traumatology and Orthopedics recently performed an emergency operation on a 39-year-old man whose left hand was crushed by an ice-cutting machine.
The man, named L.D.C, a native of neighboring Dong Nai Province, was admitted to the hospital with his severely-injured left hand, said Vo Hoa Khanh, head of the hospital’s Quality Management Department, on Saturday.
On an unspecified evening, when he was working with the ice-cutting machine, his left arm got accidentally stuck in the machine.
Some people around immediately turned off the machine and managed to pull out his arm, which was severely injured.
He was rushed to Dong Nai General Hospital before being sent to the Ho Chi Minh City Hospital for Traumatology and Orthopedics on the same night for intensive treatment.
The severe injury put him at risk of having one-third of the left arm amputated.
Therefore, the surgeons performed an emergency operation the same night to save him from the risk of disability.
Nguyen Quang Vinh, who directly performed the operation, said his team managed to rejoin the patient’s injured hand in a two-hour surgery.
One day after the surgery, he could move his fingers on the affected hand, the doctor said, adding that the patient needs to strictly follow medical instructions and maintain physical therapy practice in order to recover.
Vinh advised people to wear protective gear and fully comply with work safety regulations to avoid similar accidents.
