A court in Hanoi on Wednesday issued the death sentence to a barber who fatally stabbed his girlfriend 25 times.

Hoang Van Thanh, the 25-year-old barber in question hailing from northern Thai Nguyen Province, was also sentenced to an additional year in prison for intentionally causing injury.

The first-instance judgment showed that in 2020, Thanh was in a romantic relationship with 20-year-old U.T.P., who hailed from northern Lai Chau Province and was working as a nail technician in Hanoi at the time.

When Thanh arrived at P.’s nail salon on Vuong Thua Vu Street in Thanh Xuan District, Hanoi to pick her up at around 11:15 pm on January 12, 2023, he saw the woman talking with T.T.D., a 28-year-old local.

Thanh questioned P. about her situation with D. and was informed that D. was her lover.

Thanh then left P. waiting at the nail salon before returning with a newly-bought knife hidden in his coat.

The man questioned P. once again about her relation with D. and received silence this time.

In anger, he knocked the woman down and used the knife to stab her 15 times.

He walked ten meters away, then turned around to check her state.

Seeing that P. was still able to make small movements, the man stabbed her another ten times, killing the woman at the scene.

While D. attempted to control Thanh, he sustained a stab in his left arm.

Thanh then threw the knife at the scene and fled on his motorbike before turning himself in to police in Thanh Xuan District on January 14.

The trial panel determined that Thanh’s criminal actions were extremely severe, inhumane, and demonstrated a brutal and cruel intent to kill the victim, relentlessly carrying out the crime to its completion.

Therefore, they handed down a summary judgment of the death penalty on Thanh.
