Police in Tien Giang Province, southern Vietnam have detained a 14-year-old boy for allegedly fatally poisoning his father and grandmother in Cai Be District last weekend.

The suspect is Pham Minh Qu., 14, and the fatal victims were Pham Thi P., 83, and Pham Van Y., 45.

At the police station, Qu. confessed that he had been living with his mother and maternal grandparents in the same district since he was six years old, following his parents’ separation.

In 2021, he left school and began working alongside his mother at his aunt’s fruit farm in the province.

Qu. started sleeping over at his paternal grandmother’s house about two or three years ago.

His father, 45-year-old Y., had a habit of consuming alcohol, and on multiple occasions, when Qu. asked his father to refrain from drinking, he would respond with scolding him.

Therefore, Qu. came up with a plan to kill Y.

Around August, Qu. got to know N.P.D., a 39-year-old local resident, who possessed dog poison.

On October 13, Qu. and his younger brother met D. to ask for an amount of poison to trap stray dogs.

Then, around 11:00 pm the same day, Qu. put the poison in the powdered milk carton that P. and Y. often drank.

At around 6:00 am on October 14, P. found her son, Y., dead.

The family thought Y. died of a disease, so they did not report his death to the local authorities.

At 10:00 pm on the same day, after drinking 100ml of powdered milk prepared by her daughter, P. immediately suffered a tightness across her chest and shortness of breath, vomited and died five minutes later.

The family also thought that P. died of a disease, so they did not inform the local administration of her death.

At 4:00 am on October 15, Pham Minh T., 55, another son of P., made 150ml of the powdered milk while attending P.’s funeral but developed symptoms of headache, dizziness, and vomiting after drinking only 50ml of the powdered milk.

His family rushed him to Trieu An-Loan Tram Hospital in neighboring Vinh Long Province.

Doctors there diagnosed T. with milk poisoning and transferred him to Vinh Long General Hospital for further treatment.

Subsequently, T. was transported to Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City in an extremely critical state, suffering damage to multiple vital organs, including the liver, kidneys, lungs, and heart muscle.

He required mechanical ventilation and hemodialysis.

It has been revealed that both P. and T. consumed milk from the same carton. This information was only reported to local authorities after T.’s death.

Currently, T. is in stable health and has been discharged from the hospital to rejoin his family.

The Tien Giang Department of Public Security then instructed specialized teams to conduct a thorough on-site examination and autopsy to probe the case.

Upon analyzing the findings from the samples collected at the scene and the investigation, they concluded that Qu. was linked to the incident.
