The Ministry of Transport joined hands with the authorities of Tien Giang and Vinh Long Provinces in Vietnam's Mekong Delta region to organize inauguration ceremonies for My Thuan 2 Bridge and My Thuan-Can Tho Expressway on Sunday.

The two key traffic infrastructure projects, part of the big-ticket Eastern North-South Expressway project, will officially be opened to traffic at 7:00 am on Monday.

Located 350 meters upstream of the existing My Thuan 1 Bridge, the new bridge over the Tien (Front) River links the two provinces, starting from an intersection with Trung Luong-My Thuan Expressway in Tien Giang and ending at an intersection with My Thuan - Can Tho Expressway in Vinh Long.

The project, comprising both the bridge and its associated approach roads, covers a total distance of 6.61 kilometers and comes with a cost exceeding VND5 trillion (US$205.4 million).

The bridge alone is 1.9 kilometers long, and has six lanes and a designed speed of 80 kilometers per hour.

The cable-stayed bridge project, with a 650-meter-long main span, got off the ground in August 2020.

Meanwhile, work on the My Thuan-Can Tho Expressway project started in January 2021, with a total investment of over VND4.8 trillion ($198.3 million).

The expressway starts from My Thuan 2 Bridge, connects with Trung Luong-My Thuan Expressway, and ends at an intersection with the existent National Highway 1 in Binh Minh Town, Vinh Long Province.

The 23-kilometer-long My Thuan-Can Tho Expressway runs across Vinh Long and Dong Thap Provinces.

The newly-inaugurated expressway features four lanes and allows a speed limit of 90 kilometers per hour.

The expressway, together with Ho Chi Minh City-Trung Luong Expressway, Trung Luong-My Thuan Expressway, and My Thuan 2 Bridge, is expected to ease the traffic burden on National Highway 1, while shortening the time to travel between Ho Chi Minh City and Can Tho City by nearly two hours.

Addressing the inauguration ceremony for the two projects, Lu Quang Ngoi, chairman of the Vinh Long People’s Committee, underlined the significance of My Thuan 2 Bridge and My Thuan-Can Tho Expressway for the region’s socio-economic growth.

Both projects played a crucial role in enhancing the traffic infrastructure network and bolstering the logistics system in the region.

“The two traffic projects will help the province boost its economic development and attract more investors,” Ngoi said.

Besides, Tuyen Quang-Phu Tho Expressway, which links the two northern provinces of Tuyen Quang and Phu Tho, as part of the Western North-South Expressway, was inaugurated on the same day.

The opening of My Thuan-Can Tho Expressway and Tuyen Quang-Phu Tho Expressway helped raise the total length of expressways nationwide to 1,900 kilometers, said Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

The country is set to develop some 3,000 kilometers of expressways by 2025.

Regarding the My Thuan 2 Bridge, PM Chinh emphasized that the project was entirely designed, constructed, and supervised by Vietnamese entities.

He emphasized that the country possesses several robust contractors with advanced technology capabilities, well-equipped to undertake the construction of cable-stayed bridges like My Thuan 2 Bridge.
