Police in Thua Thien-Hue Province, central Vietnam on Tuesday said that they had broken up an illegal online football betting ring whose transactions exceeded US$7.2 million within a month.
Officers have temporarily detained nine individuals, including Hoang Anh Luan, who is a 31-year-old resident of the province’s Huong Tra Town and was identified as the ringleader.
Other suspects include Tran Cong Tho, Duong Minh Tam, Do Duy Binh, Le Huu Dung, Phan Minh Lo, Nguyen Tho, Tran Quang Thai, and Do Duy Chuong.
Police discovered that Tran Cong Tho utilized a football betting account on the website agbong88.com set up eight additional accounts at lower levels.
He then assigned the new accounts to subordinates to directly engage in football betting on the website.
Further investigation revealed that Luan provided Tho’s betting account, as well as granted similar accounts to the other seven suspects to run the betting system.
During questioning at the police station, Luan confessed to managing a high-level football betting account with a limit of 1.4 million USD, the symbolic currency used for transactions on the agbong88.com website.
Each USD on this website equals to VND13,000-50,000 ($0.53-2.05), depending on the level of the gambler and the time of their transaction.
Police determined that the total transaction amount on Luan’s football betting account exceeded 3.5 million USD within a month, equivalent to over VND176 billion ($7.2 million).
