Hoi An bakery reopens 3 months after mass food poisoning

Banh Mi Phuong, a well-known bakery in Hoi An, Quang Nam Province, central Vietnam reopened its door on Wednesday after a three-month suspension over its role in a food poisoning incident which involved hundreds of customers in September 2023.
Dozens of customers, mainly foreigners, have visited the bakery to buy Vietnamese sandwiches after Banh Mi Phuong announced its reopening on its Facebook fan page.
Truong Thi Phuong, the Banh Mi Phuong owner, refused to talk about the incident, explaining that she wanted to focus on rebuilding her business.
Earlier, she told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that the food poisoning was an “unexpected incident.”
During the suspension, the bakery focused on renovations, investing in machinery, developing new processes, and reviewing its food safety procedures.
A leader from the Hoi An government said relevant units in the city had created favorable conditions for Banh Mi Phuong to resume its operations.
In September last year, hundreds of customers reported suffering from food poisoning after eating banh mi, a type of Vietnamese baguette typically filled with cold meats, pâté, and vegetables, bought from the bakery.
The administration in Quang Nam Province on October 3 last year levied a VND96 million (US$3,962) fine and a three-month suspension on the bakery.
