Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh called on relevant units to shorten the construction time of the Long Thanh International Airport project in southern Dong Nai Province by three to six months during his inspection trip to the construction site of the project on Tuesday.

After inspecting the progress of the project and visiting workers who were working at the construction site through Tet and households whose land lots were reclaimed to make room for the project, the Vietnamese government leader presided over a meeting on the project’s progress.

He hailed the relevant units’ efforts to develop the project, specifically the completion of the site clearance work and procedures.

The prime minister said 2022 and 2023 were the time to kick-off the project. The project execution should be accelerated this year and the next so that it could be completed and put into operation in the first half of 2026.

PM Chinh urged the People’s Committee of Dong Nai Province to quickly complete the site clearance for the entire project and promptly deal with hindrances during resettlement.

He requested Dong Nai authorities and relevant agencies to early study and develop the Long Thanh airport city, connect the airport and Tan Son Nhat International Airport in neighboring Ho Chi Minh City, and stay ready to carry out the second phase of the project.

During a visit to the Loc An-Binh Son resettlement area of the Long Thanh International Airport project, PM Chinh thanked project-hit households for handing over their land for the project, reiterating the Party and the state’s policy to ensure a good living environment for residents.

He also asked local agencies to create jobs for these residents and give them the priority to work at the Long Thanh International Airport project and the airport when it is completed.

At the meeting, a representative of the Ministry of Transport reported that the authorities of Dong Nai Province had handed over 100 percent of the cleared site for the first phase of the project and 98.7 percent of the land needed for the entire project.

The under-construction airport project will be the largest airport in Vietnam upon completion with an annual capacity of 100 million passengers and five million metric tons of cargo.

The project, including four components, needs an estimated investment of some VND336.63 trillion (US$13.7 billion).

The Vietur consortium led by Turkey’s IC Ictas won the package to construct the passenger terminal worth VND35 trillion ($1.4 billion), the largest package requiring the most complicated techniques and the longest execution time of the third component—essential facilities—of the Long Thanh International Airport project.

Work on the package commenced on August 31 last year.

After more than five months, contractors have mobilized over 3,200 workers and nearly 1,300 pieces of machinery and equipment to conduct packages.
