Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City on Tuesday reported the successful treatment of a woman who experienced a severe injury, wherein her entire scalp was torn off by a yarn winding machine.
The hospital admitted the patient, K.O., 28, from Tay Ninh Province, a neighbor of Ho Chi Minh City, on January 18 when her entire scalp was torn off, her helix was broken, and her skull was exposed.
She was pulled into a yarn winding machine because she was not wearing a protective suit.
She was immediately rushed to the medical center in Go Dau District, Tay Ninh Province before being transferred to Xuyen A General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City and then Cho Ray Hospital.
Her co-workers took O.’s torn-off scalp out of the yarn winding machine, put it in a plastic bag, preserved it with ice, and brought it to the hospital.
Doctors at Cho Ray Hospital performed a surgical operation to reconnect her scalp. The surgery lasted for 4.5 hours.

A month after the surgery, the patient has recovered spectacularly and her hair is growing again.
Doctor Ngo Duc Hiep, head of Cho Ray Hospital’s department of burns and plastic surgery, said this was the first time the hospital had admitted a patient whose entire scalp was torn off in a labor accident and had successfully treated the case.
During the surgery, doctors were divided into two teams with one looking for blood vessels in her scalp and the other seeking blood vessels in the patient’s head.
They had to use microscopes to perform the medical operation.
The surgery's success was attributed to swift action in reattaching the patient's scalp, the proper preservation of the detached scalp by the patient's coworkers, and the accurate treatment provided by lower-level medical centers, Dr. Hiep said.
