The authorities in Quang Nam Province in central Vietnam have green-lit a project which carries a price tag of over VND2.7 trillion (US$106.5 million) to revitalize the Truong Giang River by dredging the riverbed and building embankments, a floodwater drainage system, and bridges.

Many residents have encroached on the Truong Giang River to make room for shrimp farms and houses.

Of the total investment, the province will borrow VND1.83 trillion ($72.2 million) as official development assistance loans and source VND880 billion ($34.7 million) from its budget.

The investor of the project is the provincial traffic construction investment project management board.

Under the project, the province will dredge the 60-kilometer Truong Giang River passing through Duy Xuyen, Thang Binh and Nui Thanh Districts and Tam Ky City until 2027 and build embankments on sections at high risk of erosion along the river.

After being dredged, the river can allow vessels with a tonnage of 100 metric tons each to travel.

In Tam Ky City, a nearly-2.4-kilometer floodwater drainage system to the Truong Giang River will be constructed.

Quang Nam authorities will also build six new bridges spanning the Truong Giang River, including Binh Duong, Hung My, Binh Nam, Tinh Thuy, Tam Thanh, and Tam Tien.

The project is aimed at enhancing the connectivity with key coastal economic centers, residential areas, and tourist sites, creating a comprehensive traffic system and contributing to the province’s socio-economic development.

The project will also help improve the inland waterway traffic system, the floodwater drainage in the Truong Giang River valley, and prevent floods in Tam Ky City, thus serving the economic and tourism development.

It is expected to ease environmental pollution and facilitate vessels to seek shelter in case of storms.
