Doctors at the Hospital of Hai Duong Medical Technical University in the namesake province in northern Vietnam successfully removed a 20-centimeter-long toothbrush from the stomach of a woman who accidentally swallowed it while brushing her teeth.
The hospital admitted 46-year-old V.T.O. on Wednesday afternoon.
Because her stomach was full after a meal, removing the toothbrush was challenging.
Doctors opted for an endoscopic procedure to extract the object.
Dr. Vu Cong Danh, head of the gastroenterology department, noted that the case was rare due to the size and hardness of the toothbrush, requiring experienced and meticulous handling.

He emphasized that gastrointestinal foreign bodies are common medical emergencies and should be treated promptly to avoid serious complications such as ulcers, bleeding, or perforations.
Danh advised people to develop careful eating habits, such as eating slowly, chewing thoroughly, avoiding talking or joking while eating, and being cautious when brushing their teeth or handling small objects like toothpicks.
If an object is accidentally swallowed, immediate medical attention is crucial.
