Police in Quang Nam province, central Vietnam announced on Tuesday that they had initiated legal proceedings and detained two foreign nationals, a Malaysian and a Chinese, for allegedly swindling and misappropriating credit card information from Vietnamese citizens.
Lim Jian Wing, from Malaysia, and Wang RuiJie, from China, are accused of using mobile and telecom networks and electronic devices to appropriate credit card information.
On July 24, police officers in Hoi An City, Quang Nam Province brought the two foreigners into the police station for questioning after being alerted by local tech retailer FPT Shop that the two foreigners appeared suspicious when buying mobile phones there.
Police discovered that they had posed as bank clerks and called P.D.T., a resident in northern Quang Ninh Province, to ask him to provide his personal information.
They then appropriated P.D.T.’s credit card details, using them to purchase two iPhone 15 Pro Max devices worth nearly VND70 million (US$2,800) at the FPT Shop in Hoi An. They intended to sell the phones for cash.
Police officers also found that the two men had appropriated other credit cards to repeat the crime.
Between June 18 and July 24, they bought 19 iPhone 15s valued at over VND500 million ($20,031) from electronics stores, including Dien May Xanh, FPT Shop, and Viettel Store, all in Quang Nam Province and neighboring Da Nang City.
Police officers have urged local residents to exercise caution and refrain from sharing credit card information with unknown individuals.
