-- Chairman of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Vyacheslav Victorovich Volodin on Monday held talks with Chairman of Vietnam's lawmaking National Assembly Tran Thanh Man, who is paying an official visit to Russia through Tuesday, affirming that Russia always attaches importance to the relationship with Vietnam and considers the Southeast Asian country a close partner.

-- Lao Party General Secretary and President Thongloun Sisoulith, along with Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, sent messages of sympathy on Monday to Vietnam’s Party General Secretary and State President To Lam and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh over the heavy losses caused by typhoon Yagi on September 6-7.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel also expressed sympathy to Vietnam via a post on social media platform X.

Society

-- The water level in the Red River in northern Vietnam rose, flooding many residential areas in Ba Dinh, Tay Ho, and Hoan Kiem Districts in Hanoi, forcing residents there to flee the rising floodwaters from midnight on Monday until early Tuesday.

-- Typhoon Yagi and the resulting downpours, floods, landslides, and bridge collapse have claimed 58 lives and left 40 others missing in Vietnam as of 10:00 pm on Monday, according to the Vietnam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority.

-- Authorities in Hanoi required reviewing bridges in the city, identifying and reinforcing weak ones to ensure safety, at a meeting on Monday. 

-- Rescuers in Quang Ninh Province, northern Vietnam on Monday saved a 14-year-old girl who was stuck in a landslide for three hours. 

-- Bai Chay Hospital in northern Quang Ninh Province on Monday admitted six people suffering carbon monoxide poisoning as they used electric generators given a power outage in the wake of typhoon Yagi.

Lifestyle

-- Vietnam’s chao tom (grilled shrimp wrapped around sugarcane sticks) and cha gio (fried spring rolls) have been named among the top 100 appetizers in the world by TasteAtlas, an online travel guide based in Croatia.

World News

-- “Apple on Monday unveiled its long-awaited, artificial intelligence-boosted iPhone 16 and promised improvements in its Siri personal assistant as it rolled out new software, beginning in test mode next month,” according to Reuters.

-- “Australia said on Tuesday it planned to introduce legislation this year to ban children from using social media platforms, citing the risks it could pose to physical and mental health,” Reuters reported.
