A flash flood swept through a mountainous village of 35 households with 128 people in Lao Cai Province, northern Vietnam on Tuesday, claiming 16 lives.

Trinh Xuan Truong, chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Tuesday night that the deadly flash flood ravaged Lang Nu Village in Phuc Khanh Commune under Bao Yen District on Tuesday morning.

“The flash flood damaged the village, which is home to 35 households with 128 people,” Truong said.

After being notified of the disaster, the province quickly dispatched forces to the scene for search and rescue operations.

Over 30 people were found alive, while 16 others had been killed in the flash flood as of Tuesday night.

“Some 70 people remain missing in the aftermath of the flash flood,” Bao Yen District Party secretary Hoang Quoc Bao said on Tuesday night.

Bao stated that the Bao Yen administration was informed of the flash flood around 10:15 am the same day.

As the disaster-hit village is far from the center of the district, paired with unfavorable traffic links, rescuers found it hard to approach the scene soon.

They arrived in the area at 2:00 pm, rescuing 10 victims of the flash flood and discovered 15 bodies.

The rescuers found another corpse covered in mud on Tuesday evening.

“This is the most catastrophic flash flood that has ever struck the district,” Bao said. “Rescuers are enhancing their efforts to search for those missing from the disaster.”
