Heavy rainfall from Sunday night through Monday morning caused severe flooding along many streets in Vinh City, the capital of Nghe An Province in north-central Vietnam.
The prolonged downpour made it challenging for motorists and motorcylcists to wade through heavily-flooded streets such as Nguyen Thai Hoc, Dinh Cong Trang, Nguyen Van Cu, Phan Boi Chau, and Le Nin Boulevard.
Many vehicles broke down as their wheels were half submerged in rainwater.
A number of office workers experienced a bad start to the week due to the torrential rain and flooding at rush hour.
Nguyen Thi Tam, a 32-year-old office worker in Vinh, sought her company’s permission to work from home on Monday morning after she failed to get through the severely-flooded road outside her house.

On Dinh Cong Trang Street, which is lined with plenty of office buildings and schools, water levels reached 0.5 meters, forcing some schools to close and send their students home.
Urban sanitation workers were dispatched to the flooded road sections where they cleared garbage and unblocked the drainage system.

To address flooding, the Vinh administration said that more than VND900 billion (US$36.8 million) was earmarked for 33 projects to upgrade local roads and the drainage system during the 2020-25 period.
The provincial steering committee for natural disaster prevention and control has asked local authorities to inspect residential areas near rivers, streams, and low-lying regions at high risk of flooding, flash floods, and landslides.
Officials have been instructed to clear waterways and prepare for potential evacuation operations.

The weather agency in north-central Vietnam earlier said that a low-pressure area could form and directly impact the eastern part of the East Vietnam Sea and the Gulf of Tonkin between Saturday and Sunday last week.
From Sunday to Monday this week, a cold front will possibly impact the north-central and northern regions, as well as bring widespread downpours to the central provinces stretching from Thanh Hoa to Quang Binh.
