Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh held a brief meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Davos on Tuesday (local time) during the former’s trip to Switzerland for attending the 55th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) and engaging in bilateral activities.
The two leaders underscored the importance of Vietnam-Ukraine ties, emphasizing traditional friendship, partnership, and comprehensive cooperation.
Both sides expressed their desire to maintain and enhance bilateral collaboration, including delegation exchanges at various levels.
They discussed measures to restore and boost trade exchanges and agreed to resume the Vietnam-Ukraine Intergovernmental Committee for Economic and Trade Cooperation to sustain growth momentum.
PM Chinh reiterated Vietnam’s balanced and consistent stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, advocating for peaceful resolutions based on international law and the United Nations Charter.
He emphasized respect for sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, rejecting the use of force or threats while considering the legitimate interests of all parties.
He also supported global mediation efforts and expressed Vietnam's readiness to contribute to international initiatives promoting dialogue for peace.
The top Vietnamese official requested the Ukrainian government to ensure the safety and security of Vietnamese citizens residing and working in this Eastern European country.
PM Chinh also had same-day high-level meetings with Lithuanian Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas, Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino Quintero, and World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Director-General Daren Tang.
Lithuanian PM Paluckas expressed interest in strengthening economic, trade, and energy cooperation, particularly in renewable energy and liquefied natural gas.
The meeting with Panamanian President Mulino Quintero focused on expanding ties into new areas such as infrastructure, electric vehicles, pharmaceuticals, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges.
WIPO’s Daren Tang congratulated Vietnam for being in the top 50 countries on the Global Innovation Index and praised its leadership's strategic vision.
He also expressed excitement about collaborating on Vietnam's local innovation index.
PM Chinh invited these three top leaders to visit Vietnam and they gladly accepted.
The top Vietnamese official’s participation in the WEF meeting is part of his on-going European tour from January 15 to 23 to tighten ties with Poland, Czechia, and Switzerland.
With the theme of ‘Collaboration for the Intelligent Age’, the 55th Annual Meeting of the WEF, held from January 20 to 24, gathers approximately 3,000 leaders from countries, international organizations, and leading corporations globally.
