After nearly 20 years of use, the An Cu 5 apartment complex in Son Tra District, Da Nang has fallen into a state of complete disrepair, leaving residents increasingly uneasy.
Over 60 families live in blocks A and B of the ramshackle apartments.
The tenement opened in 2007.
According to Nguyen Chien, his apartment’s walls are cracking and the window of the bedroom was already broken.
“Concrete slabs from the ceiling sometimes fall on me when I am lying down on the living room sofa,” he grumbled.
“My family is listed as a poor household, and we do not have enough money to repair the dilapidated apartment.
“I hope that local authorities support my family and other disadvantaged households in carrying out repairs and stabilizing our lives."

Tran Thi Anh Phuong, another resident in the building, has similar worries.
Phuong lamented that she had spent some VND100 million (US$4,000) repairing her degraded flat, but the ceiling is still leaking.
The municipal Department of Construction had previously issued a decision to allocate VND5 billion ($196,740) to the Da Nang Center for Housing Management and Exploitation to repair the rundown apartments.
The center is conducting relevant procedures to start work on an An Cu 5 tenement repair project.
