Floodwaters inundated a school in Dong Nai Province, a neighbor of Ho Chi Minh City, forcing some 3,000 students to stay home on Tuesday.
Vo Thi Bich Thuy, principal of Phuoc Tan 1 Middle School in Phuoc Tan Ward, located in the provincial capital of Bien Hoa, confirmed the school was closed due to severe flooding, which led to the cancelation of 58 classes for grades 6-9, affecting a total of 2,998 students.
The water level started to rise in the wee hours of the same day, while the schoolyard was submerged at 8:30 am.
The road in front of the school was also turned into a ‘river.’
“The school was nearly 80 centimeters under water, prompting it to allow students to stay home to ensure their safety,” Thuy explained.
After the water receded, the school would conduct clean-up operations and announce its reopening, she added.
Some locals attributed the flooding to torrential rains over the past few days.
Water from the upstream area of the local Buong River poured into Bien Hoa, leading to dangerous conditions.
Apart from the school, several streets and households were impacted as well.
