The administration of Dong Nai Province in southern Vietnam said on Tuesday that it had granted environmental approval to a new monkey breeding farm which will produce 14,000 monkeys annually for export to serve biomedical research.

Operated by Vietnam Primate Breeding and Development Corporation, the farm will span nearly 70,000 square meters upon completion, with over 17,000 square meters dedicated to enclosures, in Tam Phuoc Ward in the provincial city of Bien Hoa.

The company is required to comply with strict environmental regulations, including properly operating waste treatment facilities to meet environmental standards, taking measures to minimize noise and vibrations, and managing all waste.

This is the second monkey breeding farm in Dong Nai that has received environmental approval under the same operator.

The first one, also situated in Tam Phuoc Ward, was licensed on June 27 this year and covers 53,000 square meters, with an annual capacity of 12,000 monkeys.

The corporation has been operating for over 30 years in Bien Hoa, specializing in breeding monkeys for export to the U.S., Europe, and Japan.

According to the provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment, these exports are primarily for biomedical research focusing on advancing human health.
