Residents of Nhat Tri Islet in Nha Trang City, Khanh Hoa Province, south-central Vietnam are increasingly concerned about high tides and large waves caused by storms and floods, which are damaging homes, property, and putting lives at risk.
In recent days, residents on the islet, located in Vinh Phuoc Ward, Nha Trang City, have reported severe erosion conditions to authorities.
Some households have evacuated over the risk of home collapse.
Nhat Tri Islet, located at the estuary, covers an area of 21.2 hectares and is home to around 1,400 households.

During recent storms and large waves, coastal erosion has worsened, with high tides flooding alleys and damaging properties, creating a growing threat to lives and livelihoods on the islet.
Despite residents’ efforts to reinforce temporary embankments, the situation remains unresolved.
The erosion, caused by sea waves hitting the islet, has become increasingly dangerous, especially during heavy rain and storms.
Many longtime residents have witnessed the worsening of this issue over the years, with big waves continuously damaging homes.

A government-backed urban renovation project to build embankments and roads around Nhat Tri Islet has been planned for over 20 years, but has not yet been completed.
Residents are calling on local authorities to urgently assess the situation and take action.
They have proposed measures such as building breakwaters, reinforcing the coastline to prevent further erosion, and providing support for families severely impacted by landslides and flooding.

In response, the People’s Committee of Vinh Phuoc Ward stated that the Nha Trang People’s Committee has agreed to invest in building a temporary embankment by 2025.
Recently, local leaders visited affected households and presented gifts.
They also pledged to review policies for damage support and resettlement for severely affected families.
