The People’s Committee of Tay Ninh Province in southern Vietnam has preliminarily estimated the total cost for the first phase of the proposed Tay Ninh airport construction at around VND4.73 trillion (US$186 million), with an annual capacity of one million passengers.

Of the total capital, some VND711 billion ($28 million) will be sourced from the central and local coffers, while the rest will be arranged via the public-private partnership (PPP) format, according to a recent dispatch sent by the province to the Ministry of Transport.

The investor of the project is expected to recoup their capital in 42 years.

The airport is planned to be located in Phuoc Ninh Commune, Duong Minh Chau District, according to the provincial administration.

As planned, Tay Ninh Airport will be located approximately 74 kilometers from Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City and nearly 106 kilometers from the under-construction Long Thanh International Airport in Dong Nai Province.

The proposed airport will be 44 kilometers from the border with Cambodia, around 24 kilometers from Tay Ninh City, the provincial capital, 15 kilometers from the Ba Den Mountain tourist area, and nearly 68 kilometers from Lo Go Xa Mat National Park.

If approved, the airport will be built on a vacant land lot with even terrain, far from residential areas, making it easy for site clearance and compensation.

The airport was designed to meet the requirements of the 4E category of the International Civil Aviation Organization and have an annual capacity of one million passengers, along with a peak hour capacity of 400 passengers per hour.

The airport will feature a runway with a length of 3,200 meters and a width of 45 meters, plus six aircraft parking spots.

It was designed to accommodate Code E aircraft such as Boeing 777-300ER, Airbus A350-900 and the equivalents, and Code C airliners like Airbus A320 and A321.

Tay Ninh Airport will be opened for both civil and military operations.

As planned, it will be listed as a domestic terminal, but will offer international flights as well.

The Tay Ninh airport project will span an area of 420 hectares, including the reserved land for future development.

The project is set to get off the ground during the 2026-30 period.

In the dispatch, the provincial administration asked the ministry for consideration of the project before the province submits the plan to the prime minister for approval.

If passed, the Tay Ninh airport project will be added to the national general airport plan in the 2021-30 period, with a vision toward 2050.
