Vietnam shared its experience in improving road safety at the Fourth Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety, held in Marrakech, Morocco from Tuesday to Thursday this week.
The conference brought together ministers, road safety officials, and over 1,500 experts from the United Nations and other global institutions.
The event aimed to recognize countries with effective traffic accident reduction measures and to strengthen national commitments to halving global road traffic deaths by 2030.
Representing Vietnam at the conference, Colonel Pham Quang Huy from the Traffic Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security delivered a speech on Vietnam’s approach to ensuring road traffic safety.
He emphasized that traffic safety has been a top priority for the Vietnamese government, with policies focusing on reducing accidents and protecting citizens.
“Every life lost to traffic accidents is not just a personal tragedy but a societal loss,” he said.
He pointed out that many victims are of working age, making road accidents not only a humanitarian concern but also an economic burden.
Vietnam has made significant efforts to enhance traffic laws, improve road infrastructure, and implement technology-driven enforcement.
The country has introduced new traffic safety regulations, particularly aimed at protecting vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women, and people with disabilities.
Authorities in the Southeast Asian country have also worked to eliminate accident-prone areas, expand public transportation, and integrate AI-powered traffic monitoring systems to improve law enforcement.
At the conference, the World Health Organization and other participating nations praised Vietnam’s initiatives, recognizing them as valuable contributions to global road safety.
Vietnam reaffirmed its commitment to the United Nations’ Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-30, pledging to reduce annual road traffic fatalities and injuries by 5-10 percent through sustainable measures.
