In a significant move to address the growing issue of canal pollution in Ho Chi Minh City, Nguyen Luong Ngoc, head of the Sai Gon Xanh (Green Saigon) Club under the Vietnam Youth Federation in the city, has announced a plan to deploy robots to collect trash from canals.

The initiative aims to replace the current practice of volunteers wading into the canals to manually remove waste.

Ngoc said on Monday that volunteers from the club, before embarking on their canal cleanup missions, had received vaccinations against tetanus, typhoid, cholera, and other diseases.

They will also be equipped with protective gear to reduce the risk of injury or infection.

If one steps on sharp objects, the club is prepared to quickly transport them to a nearby medical facility for immediate treatment.

However, he stressed that while the protective measures are important, the real solution lies in changing public awareness about waste disposal.

Besides, it is necessary to use robots to remove waste from canals to reduce the dependence on human labor for such hazardous tasks, he said.

The club plans to unveil its first trash-collecting robot in the next 45 days.

This robot, developed by the club’s volunteers, operates autonomously and is powered by solar energy.

The development and implementation of this robot are part of a collaborative effort involving several organizations and partners.

Young volunteers of the club and youth union members collected over 10 metric tons of garbage from Hy Vong Canal in Tan Binh District in about three hours on Saturday.

Ngoc said that over 30 volunteers of the club equipped with protective gear participated in the garbage collection on Hy Vong Canal, which had deep water in the morning, with shards of ceramic, sharp objects, and decaying animal carcasses emitting foul odors.

“The Sai Gon Xanh Club hopes the residents will become more mindful of environmental issues, properly dispose of their waste, and refrain from littering,” Ngoc shared.
