Young volunteers of Sai Gon Xanh (Green Saigon) and youth union members collected over 10 metric tons of garbage from Hy Vong Canal in Tan Binh District, Ho Chi Minh City in about three hours on Saturday.

Le Vien Duy Tuoc, secretary of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union of Ward 15, Tan Binh District, said that in response to the Youth Month 2025, the Youth Union of Ward 15 organized a cleaning campaign at the box culvert area on Hy Vong Canal.

In the coming time, the Youth Union of Ward 15 will collaborate with the Sai Gon Xanh Club to install more trash barriers on the canal to prevent garbage from entering box culverts.

Nguyen Luong Ngoc, head of the Sai Gon Xanh Club, said that over 30 volunteers of the club participated in the garbage collection on Hy Vong Canal.

The canal had deep water in the morning, with shards of ceramic, sharp objects, and decaying animal carcasses emitting foul odors.

In the coming time, the Sai Gon Xanh Club will work with relevant agencies to install many more trash barriers along the canal to better manage the source of waste and prevent garbage from flowing to the downstream area.

Sai Gon Xanh hopes that people around the canal will pay more attention to environmental issues, dispose of waste properly, and avoid littering, Ngoc noted.

Previously, Hy Vong Canal was full of trash.

Some residents living near the canal said that after heavy rains, garbage accumulates as it is carried by the flowing water.

Do Phuong Nam, a volunteer participating in garbage collection from Hy Vong Canal, said there was a lot of garbage and it was difficult to bring the trash ashore. In the morning on March 1, 2025, tides were high, and volunteers had to wait until around 9:00 am for the water to recede to be able to collect trash. Photo: Ngoc Khai / Tuoi Tre
