The Hanoi People’s Committee has approved a proposal to demolish the six-story Ham Ca Map (Shark Jaw) building, located near Hoan Kiem Lake, as part of the efforts to revitalize the surrounding area, improve public spaces, and enhance the historical and cultural significance of Hoan Kiem District.
The Office of the Hanoi administration on Wednesday released the conclusion of vice-chairman Duong Duc Tuan following a recent meeting on plans to renovate Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square in the Old Quarter.
The project aims to create a harmonious architectural and landscape environment, strengthening the connection between Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter.
The Hoan Kiem District People’s Committee was tasked with developing an urban design plan focused on the areas around the lake and the square, which holds high historical and cultural value.
Ham Ca Map Building, built in 1990, houses cafés, restaurants, and shops and occupies a strategic location facing Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square, Hoan Kiem Lake, and Cau Go Street.
Its demolition is a key part of the redevelopment plan.
After the building is removed, underground spaces will be constructed beneath the square. The highlight will be a three-level underground complex, featuring a cultural space, a shopping mall, and parking lots.
Additionally, the city has called for a detailed study on upgrading nearby structures, including Long Van - Hong Van Building, Thuy Ta Building, the Ho Guom Cultural Information Center, and surrounding residential areas.
