E Hospital in Hanoi has successfully treated a 15-year-old patient diagnosed with a perforated duodenal bulb, a condition typically seen in adults aged 35-65, after the child faced academic pressure and required emergency surgery.
The hospital treated N.H.V., a 15-year-old resident of Hanoi, who was admitted with severe abdominal pain, radiating throughout her abdomen.
The patient had been previously healthy with no history of digestive issues, though she experienced stress from academic pressures.
Clinical examination and ultrasound revealed free gas and fluid in the abdomen, signs of a perforated hollow organ.
Doctors diagnosed the patient with peritonitis caused by a perforated duodenal ulcer.
Emergency laparoscopic surgery was performed to suture the 5mm perforation and clean the abdomen to prevent infection.
After timely treatment, the patient’s condition stabilized, though continued monitoring, along with dietary and lifestyle adjustments, is necessary to avoid recurrence.
Earlier, doctors at E Hospital treated another case involving a 20-year-old female patient, N.T.T., who had a perforated duodenal ulcer due to a chronic gastric ulcer.
The patient presented with severe epigastric pain and was diagnosed with peritonitis caused by a 0.5cm perforated duodenal ulcer.
Laparoscopic surgery was conducted to treat the condition.
Dr. Nguyen Dinh Lien, head of the fepartment of orology and andrology at E Hospital, noted that perforated viscus is a dangerous condition with a high mortality rate if not treated promptly.
Historically, this condition was more common among men aged 35-65, but the number of young patients with gastric and duodenal ulcers, leading to perforations, has been rising.
Dr. Lien attributed this trend to factors such as stress, academic pressure, late-night habits, unbalanced diets, and the misuse of pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs.
He advised people experiencing abdominal pain, digestive issues, and other symptoms to seek medical attention promptly.
To prevent such conditions, Dr. Lien recommended maintaining a balanced lifestyle, including a proper diet, regular rest, and periodic health check-ups.
