Vietnam’s Than Quang Ninh FC have climbed to the second place in Group G at the 2020 AFC Cup after routing Cambodia’s Svay Rieng on Wednesday.
The Vietnamese club are eyeing a ticket to the next round, as they are three points adrift of group leaders Ceres–Negros.
Than Quang Ninh FC were the favorites in the game at Phnom Penh Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh, Cambodia but they had to wait until the 36th minute to open the scoring.
Svay Rieng’s defense made a mistake, allowing the Vietnamese side to stage a quick attack.
Midfielder Hai Huy danced among a sea of defenders before his left-footed shot found the back of the hosts’ net.
But Marie Privat equalized nine minutes later, with his solo run past Than Quang Ninh FC’s defensive line and goalkeeper making a beautiful goal.
The visitors displayed their complete dominance in the second half, as Neven Lastro, Jeremie Lynch, and Nhat Minh netted on 57, 77, and 86 minutes to nail the game at 4-1.
Group G leaders Ceres-Negros beat Indonesia’s Bali United 4-0 on home soil on the same day.
Than Quang Ninh have earned four points from three games, three adrift of Ceres-Negros.
Svay Rieng and Bali United are level on three points.
Another Vietnamese side, Ho Chi Minh City FC, defeated hosts Lao Toyota 2-0 in Laos on Tuesday to top Group F with seven points from three games.
They are followed by Myanmar’s Yangon United on seven, Singapore’s Hougang United on three, and Lao Toyota on zero points.
The top two teams in each group will advance to the zonal semifinals.
The AFC Cup is the Asian equivalent to the Europa League in Europe.
Hanoi FC made it to the 2019 AFC Cup inter-zone final, where they were eliminated by North Korea's April 25 Sports Club on the away goals rule.
