An estimated 50 people staged a scene to rob visitors at a pagoda where they attacked and injured five people in An Giang Province, southern Vietnam.
At 9:20 am on Monday, Nguyen Phu Cuong, a 63-year-old local resident, accompanied by his ten relatives, visited Kim Tien Pagoda in An Phu Ward, Tinh Bien Town, An Giang Province.
When approaching the main hall, Cuong was suddenly surrounded by a group of 50 strangers, both men and women, who crowded the family, creating chaos, and pushing him to the ground.
Cuong discovered he was missing a gold necklace worth about VND3.6 million (US$143.3) and VND12 million ($477.5) in cash, and began to shout, to which the group responded by surrounding and brutally beating him.
During the attack, they also injured members of Cuong's family and then quickly fled the scene.
Immediately after receiving the news, An Phu police arrived at the scene to verify the incident. In their report, they confirmed that at least five people were injured, including Cuong.
On Tuesday, police officers said they had transferred the case to Tinh Bien police for further investigation.
