Vietnam overpowered Taiwan 3-0 in straight sets in Pool D to secure their berth in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Asian Volleyball Confederation Challenge Cup for Men held in Bahrain on Tuesday.
After their prior loss to Australia, Vietnam and Taiwan squared off directly for one last shot at advancing to the quarterfinals of their pool.
Vietnam held an advantage due to Taiwan’s lineup predominantly comprising young athletes under 20.
The Vietnamese team quickly asserted dominance from the start of Tuesday’s game, with outside hitter Nguyen Ngoc Thuan continuing his stellar performance from the previous match against Australia, delivering powerful attacks that left Taiwan struggling.

The first set ended in a decisive 25-15 victory for Vietnam.
In the second set, Vietnam’s coach Tran Dinh Tien introduced some new players, resulting in a more evenly matched and tense contest.
Despite their efforts, the young Vietnamese could not replicate their seniors’ earlier dominance.
As both teams were fiercely battling for control, the pivotal moment came at 22-22 when a Taiwanese player faulted, handing Vietnam a crucial 23-22 lead.
