The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) has extended an invitation to the Football Association of Thailand (FA Thailand) to arrange a friendly match between their national teams in September, aligning with FIFA Days, which designates dates for official and friendly international games.
FA Thailand has not yet responded to the invitation, according to VFF’s general secretary Duong Nghiep Khoi.
Currently, FA Thailand is seeking an additional opponent for the coming FIFA Days in September, which spans from September 2 to 10, accommodating two rounds.
According to news site Ball Thai Stand, Thailand are planning to invite Russia for their first match before visiting Vietnam.
The Thai site also mentioned that if the Russian side decline the invitation, Panama could be considered as an alternative for the 2022 AFF Cup (now ASEAN Championship) champions.
In addition, other candidates include teams from Europe.
Meanwhile, a friendly match between Vietnam and Thailand is very likely.
In the latest FIFA world rankings updated on June 20, Vietnam dropped one place to 116th, while Thailand rose one spot to 100th.
Both nations failed to advance to the third qualifying round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
As a result, both teams are seeking opponents for friendly matches within their available schedules in September, October, and November, leading up to the 2024 ASEAN Championship from November 23 to December 21.
