Quy Nhon City in Binh Dinh Province, south-central Vietnam will host two world beach tennis tournaments for the first time from August 18 to 25, featuring hundreds of athletes from around the globe, Bui Trung Hieu, deputy director of the provincial Department of Culture and Sports, announced on Sunday.
Vietnamese players will have a chance to compete with international athletes at the ITF BT50 Fleur De Lys Cup 2024 beach tennis tournament from August 18 to 21, as part of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Tennis Tour.
Following the Fleur De Lys Cup 2024 tournament, the ITF BT50 Vietravel Cup 2024 tournament will take place from August 22 to 25.
The two tournaments will bring together hundreds of tennis players from several nations such as Japan, Thailand, the Philippines, Slovakia, and Latvia.
The events will mark a key milestone for the development of beach tennis in Vietnam.
“Binh Dinh Province is so proud of representing Vietnam for the first time to host these world beach tennis tournaments," Hieu said.
“We will try to leave a deep impression on international friends during the tournaments."
Nguyen Hong Son, general secretary of the Vietnam Tennis Federation, said that Vietnam would send 12 players, divided into six pairs, to the two tournaments in Quy Nhon City.
Four pairs of men and two pairs of women, hailing from Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and Thanh Hoa Province, were picked to compete at these tournaments as they showed outstanding performances at the National Beach Tennis Championship 2024 in Thanh Hoa in April.
Players will vie for the championship title in the men’s doubles and women’s doubles categories, with the total prize money of US$8,000 on offer for the two tournaments.
Beach tennis is a game combining elements of tennis and volleyball, and is played on a beach.
The sport emerged in the early 1970s.
