Vietnam’s taekwondo team secured on Saturday a gold medal on the first day of the 2024 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships held in Hong Kong.
A record 1,727 athletes from 77 countries and territories are competing at the Hong Kong 2024 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships, the 13th edition of the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships.
Vietnam has sent 40 martial artists and seven coaches to the sporting event, which runs until December 4.
The Vietnamese team’s six members won the gold medal for the mixed team over 17 category at 8,680 points on the first day of competition.
The winners were Nguyen Thi Y Binh, Tran Phuong Nhung, Nguyen Thanh Hien Linh, Nguyen Ngoc Minh Hy, Tran Dang Khoa, and Ho Thanh An.
Taekwondo fighters from Mexico ended the category, which featured the participation of 15 teams, with a silver medal, while the bronze medals went to the Italian and Philippine teams.
Besides, the Vietnamese team also bagged a bronze medal for the Team Male Junior category.
With the two medals won on the first day, the Vietnamese taekwondo team has repeated the victory they pulled off eight yearts ago.
Back in 2016, Vietnam clinched a gold medal at the World Taekwondo Junior Championship in Canada.
In 2022, Vietnam won only one silver and nine bronzes at the World Taekwondo Championships hosted by South Korea.
Vietnam aims to bring home several medals at the Hong Kong 2024 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships.
