Vietnam’s first artificial intelligence (AI) robot, ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Cup, online passport application, and traveling to Taiwan were among the most-searched topics in Vietnam in 2023, according to Google’s ‘Year in Search’ report – an annual ranking of the top search trends in various countries over the past 12 months.
Google released its ‘Year in Search’ list for this year on Monday.
Unlike previous years, the U.S. tech giant skipped its familiar Most Popular Search Trends list.
Vietnam’s search history was simply divided between nine categories for the report – AI, sports, ‘how to’ queries, recipes, travel, games, ‘what’ questions, theater movies, and nearby locations.
The results solidified AI’s prominence as a key topic in recent years.
Notably, football and mobile game content dominated searches in sports and games, with football accounting for nine out of the 10 most-searched sports-related topics by Vietnamese users.
The 32nd Southeast Asian Games, the largest sporting event in the region, held the fourth position in the sports categories.
Half of the top 10 most popular search trends in travel were domestic tourist attractions, emphasizing nature-oriented destinations like Ha Giang Province in northern Vietnam, the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho, Phu Quoc City off southern Kien Giang Province, Con Phung Island in the Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre, and Buon Ma Thuot City in the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak.
For international destinations, Vietnamese tourists preferred culturally similar places, evident in searches for Taiwan, Thailand, Bali, and Singapore-Malaysia.
Vietnamese films also received significant attention in 2023, with six out of 10 domestic flicks making the list.
‘How to’ and ‘What’ searches reflected user concerns over topics like how to do Vietnam’s new identification card and what a personal identification number is.
Users also showed keen interest in nationwide news-making issues, such as renewable energy, botulinum, and respiratory failure.
The recipe category reflected a desire to learn about traditional Vietnamese dishes like banh chung (square glutinous rice cakes) and bo kho (Vietnamese beef stew), as well as a growing interest in healthy recipes like nut milk and vegetarian dishes.
The nearby location list indicated essential daily needs, with searches for services like good cardiologists’ clinics, annona tea stores, and nourishing shampoo salons reflecting Vietnamese people’s focus on food, health, and relaxation.
