With only an eighth-grade education, a passionate millennial in Kien Giang Province, southern Vietnam has crafted numerous boat models, and notably, a watercraft capable of traveling at a velocity of up to 70 kilometers per hour, garnering admiration from many.

Mai Hoang Thanh, a 27-year-old resident of Binh Son Commune in Hon Dat District, Kien Giang Province, operates a boat service for local transportation needs.

Initially focusing on river navigation, he ventured into crafting boat models equipped with engines and remote controls.

When designing a water-capable model of the Su-35 fighter jet, Thanh meticulously fashioned the hull to mimic a boat structure.

Calculating and making a symmetrical fuselage measuring approximately 7.3 meters in length and 4.6 meters in width, he ensured stability and smooth maneuverability on water without tremors or capsizing.

Weighing 350 kilograms, the Su-35 model necessitated the purchase of two old Kawasaki engines with 650cc horsepower and propellers from Ho Chi Minh City to power its propulsion.

“The most challenging aspect of creating the Su-35 fighter jet model was crafting the aircraft’s nose, fuselage, and wings,” Thanh recalled.

“I scrutinized every detail and carefully selected suitable materials to construct a robust and secure frame using composite resin.”

He chose a bike’s stem for steering, ensuring compatibility and ease of navigation underwater.

It cost him approximately VND90 million (US$3,634) to complete the watercraft over three months.

Thanh conducted a successful test run at Vam Ray sluice gate in Hon Dat District, where spectators marveled at its smooth operation, reaching a speed of 68-70 kilometers per hour.

“Thanh’s unique Su-35 model, capable of traversing water, is truly remarkable,” Nguyen Van Son from Binh Son Commune commented.

“His craft deserves utmost respect.”

A representative from the Kien Giang Department of Transport emphasized the importance of adhering to relevant regulations when operating high-speed watercraft exceeding 30 kilometers per hour.

“In fostering innovation and safeguarding intellectual property rights, we advocate for aspiring inventors like Thanh to conduct thorough research and seek guidance from the provincial Department of Science and Technology or local authorities when necessary,” the official said.
