Authorities have identified 110 mineral deposits in northwest Vietnam over the past eight years, encompassing 25 different types such as rare earths, gold, tungsten, industrial limestone, and copper.

Among the discovered deposits, 17 were classified as large-scale, 43 as medium-scale, and 50 as small-scale, according to the information published on the website of the Vietnam Department of Geology and Minerals under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment.

This achievement exceeded the initial targets set for a survey on mineral resources by more than double.

The findings were part of the ministry’s recently announced results of the project ‘Comprehensive Survey on Mineral Resources and Completion of the 1:50,000-Scale Geological Map of the Northwest Region for Sustainable Socio-Economic Development Planning,’ which was approached by the prime minister in 2017.

Apart from these discoveries, the project has delineated seven areas with deep-seated mineral potential and predicted 15 zones with magmatic rock formations that may contain strategic mineral resources.

Detailed geothermal investigations were also conducted in Dien Bien, Lai Chau, and Son La Provinces.

Northwest Vietnam’s mineral potential

Speaking at a recent event to announce the results of the project, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Tran Quy Kien emphasized that the northwest region holds a strategic position in terms of geopolitics, economy, and environmental factors.

Additionally, it is home to abundant mineral resources, including valuable deposits of rare earths and gold.

However, resource extraction and utilization in the region have not yet been fully efficient or sustainable, presenting challenges for mineral resource management.

To maximize the survey’s findings and the region’s vast resource potential, he urged local authorities to integrate the geological and mineral data into economic planning, attract investment, and ensure sustainable mineral exploitation.
