Fabio Cannavaro, the former star defender of the Italian national football team, is now at the newsroom of Tuoi Tre newspaper in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam to answer questions from fans about football.
At Tuoi Tre, the World Cup gold medalist and winner of the Best Player title in 2006 was received by Mr. Le The Chu – the deputy chief editor. Following are his online talk with fans at www.thethao.tuoitre.vn:
Question: What’s your impression in Vietnam after visiting the nation twice?
Fabio Cannavaro: I see that Vietnam is a nation with crazy love for football and that’s why I always wish to come back here. During this second visit, I feel it as friendly as staying at home.
Q: What’s your job after leaving the Italian national team? What have you been doing in the last two years?
A: I left football and move to live in Dubai. I’ve worked as an ambassador of the United Arab Emirates for two years. Now, I am also an assistant coach of a local football club, and training youth football there.
I am not regretful for leaving the Italian national team. For me, football exists in my life.
Q: To you, why do leading Italian clubs as Juventus and AC Milan fail to succeed at European arena? Is it right to say Italian football is left behind other nations?
A: Football is becoming more and more challenging, especially in Europe. Each year has a good team to emerge, it’s the rule.
After 20 years of development, Italian football has reached a slow-down, but Italu has been a destination of many clubs to visit.
Italian football is still a model in the world in terms of techniques and fitness.
Q: You played for Read Madrid, how is your judgment of the team now, especially after it has displayed mistakes in defense? Who do you like best, among the three center defenders Pepe, Ramos, and Varane?
A: Changes have occurred to the club. Coach Ancelotti replaces Mourinho and has also refreshed the style of playing football. For me, Real Madrid is one of the best clubs in Europe and is a qualified candidate to win more UEFA Champions League titles.
All the three center defenders are outstanding. For me, Ramos seems to be better.
Q: If you have a decision, to whom will you hand down the Golden Ball this year?
A: Messi and Ronaldo are the most outstanding. Ribery and Robben may also have chances.
Q: At the World Cup 2014, do you predict how far the Italian team can advance?
A: I believe and hope that Italy will be a strong team. I think Italy is a bright candidate to win the championship title.
Q: Now, which team do you like to watch?
A: It’s Germany.
Q: In your football career, you didn’t play in the UK. Do you regret for that?
A: I can’t play at the same time for many leagues. I am proud of playing for good teams in Italy and other nations. I didn’t play for an English club but in the future, I may work as a coach there.
