Hoi An turns down cable car proposal

Hoi An turns down cable car proposal

Thursday, July 05, 2018, 19:04 GMT+7

The Party Committee of Hoi An has rejected the proposal by a private firm to build a cable car link connecting the tourist city and another district in the central province of Quang Nam, shortly after the proposition grabbed local headlines.

The proposal, put forward by NVN Group, suggests developing a cable car link from Thanh Ha Ward in Hoi An, flying over the Thu Bon River, an iconic waterway in the famed ancient town, and ending in Duy Nghia Village of Duy Xuyen District in Quang Nam.

The seven-kilometer project is projected to occupy a space of greater than 100 hectares, equal to one square kilometer, and cost around VND2.1 trillion (US$92.4 million), according to NVN.

The whole cable link is estimated to span seven kilometers, with nine main pillars standing at the height of 65-80 meters from base to top, including three stations and two parking lots.

The system has a capacity of whisking 1,300 to 1,600 passengers per hour, taking about 21 minutes to travel between the two destinations each turn.

The proposed project has sparked concerns among members of the public and experts over its potential impact on the ancient space of Hoi An, a UNESCO heritage, as well as its large occupation.

It was against this context that the Standing Committee of the Party Committee of Hoi An convened a meeting on Wednesday and decided to say no to the proposition, according to a source close to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper.

Nguyen Van Dung, chairman of the Hoi An administration, also confirmed to Tuoi Tre that local administrators came to a consensus to reject the proposal.

One of the main reasons for the decision is there is not enough available space for the cable car link, according to the chairman.

“A large area of agricultural land of local residents will have to be revoked and cleared to make space for the project if it is green-lighted,” he explained.

Hoi An administrators will inform both the administration of Quang Nam and NVN of the decision to reject the proposal, Dung added.
