Budget airline Vietjet has announced the launch of a direct air route connecting Vietnam and Hiroshima, Japan, making it the first direct route of a Vietnamese airline between the two destinations.

This is Vietjet’s eighth air route linking the two countries.

There will be two return flights per week, starting from July 19.

The new air route will facilitate travel between Hiroshima and Vietnam, said Masahiko Tanabe, deputy governor of Hiroshima Prefecture.

“I look forward to more active cooperation in various sectors, including business, trade, and tourism,” Tanabe added.

Vietjet CEO Dinh Viet Phuong affirmed that the air carrier will continue expanding its network linking Japan and Vietnam and offering more bilateral and multilateral cooperation opportunities with more convenient flight options.

Vietjet plans to provide 1.5 million seats on flights between the two countries this year, comprehensively connecting Japan's biggest tourism and economic hubs to attractive destinations across Vietnam and many other destinations, such as Australia, India, and Kazakhstan.

The airline currently operates seven direct air routes connecting Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to Japanese cities of Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, and Fukuoka.

It also offers charter flights from Vietnam to Niigata, Shizuoka, Fukushima, and Ehime, according to the Vietnam News Agency.

Vietnam welcomed over 128,000 Japanese tourists last year, some 10 percent of the pre-pandemic figure.

Meanwhile, Japan attracted more than 284,000 Vietnamese travelers in 2022, accounting for 7.4 percent of its total international arrivals, news site VnExpress reported.
