Amkor Technology, established in both the U.S. and South Korea in 1968 and headquartered in the U.S., on Wednesday inaugurated a semiconductor factory in Bac Ninh Province in northern Vietnam which carried a price tag of US$1.6 billion.

This is the second semiconductor factory in northern Vietnam, following one developed by South Korea’s Hana Micron in Bac Giang Province.

Amkor Technology’s factory covers an area of 23 hectares in the Yen Phong 2 Industrial Park.

The company, a global leader in the outsourced semiconductor assembly and test industry, will pour some $530 million into the first phase of the factory project and committed to fully injecting $1.6 billion until 2035.

The factory has created jobs for some 2,000 local laborers and will increase the number of its local employees to 10,000 by 2035.

Susan Y. Kim, executive vice chairwoman of Amkor Technology, said the Vietnamese government and Bac Ninh authorities had made conditions favorable for the group to complete the semiconductor factory as planned.

Kim affirmed that the factory would be an important hub for the group’s operation network, adding that Amkor Technology expected to receive further support in labor recruitment and production.

At the factory’s inauguration ceremony, permanent vice-chairman of the People’s Committee of Bac Ninh Province Vuong Quoc Tuan emphasized that the operation of Amkor Technology’s semiconductor factory was an important milestone for the province to be featured on the global semiconductor map.

The factory will give Bac Ninh more opportunities to attract large international investors, Tuan added.

According to the provincial official, enterprises making investments in the province are not only partners but also friends who accompany the province’s development.

Therefore, Tuan suggested Amkor Technology carry out the second phase of the project while giving its mind to improving the living conditions of its laborers and complying with Vietnam’s law.
