Khanh Hoa Province in south-central Vietnam plans to build another airport which would cover some 500-550 hectares and carry a price tag of nearly VND7 trillion (US$286.9 million) in Van Ninh District.

The provincial administration convened a meeting on Monday morning for departments and relevant agencies to report their tasks related to the development of the Van Phong airport project in the 2021-30 period, with a vision toward 2050.

The Van Phong airport project was deemed to be aligned with the national master aviation plan for the 2021-30 period and an approved zoning plan to develop the Van Phong economic zone, according to a consulting unit at the meeting.

The Van Phong airport was proposed to be built under the public-private partnership and the build-operate-transfer contract.

With nine aprons and a runway length of 3,050 meters, the airport would be able to serve 2.5 million passengers per year by 2030.

The airport would undergo expansion with its annual capacity raised to 10 million passengers and the number of aprons adjusted upward to 27, if the volume of passengers and commodities surpasses its initial capacity.

Speaking at the meeting, chairman of the provincial administration Nguyen Tan Tuan asked the provincial Department of Transport and the consulting unit to complete their tasks on the project before submitting it to the Ministry of Transport and the prime minister for approval.

Meanwhile, other relevant agencies were told to check a land fund previously earmarked for production forest development so as to convert the land use purpose, if necessary.

Tuan urged the consulting unit to determine suppliers of materials to serve the airport construction, supplement a fuel storage warehouse, a commodities warehouse, an aircraft maintenance facility in the airport as well as assess the effectiveness of the project.

In October last year, Khanh Hoa proposed the prime minister approve adjustments to the zoning plan for the Van Phong economic zone project, including the development of the Van Phong civil airport.

Currently, Khanh Hoa has one airport located in Cam Ranh City, which is some 35 kilometers north of the province’s popular beach city of Nha Trang.

It was upgraded to an international airport in 2007.
