The Vietnamese state-owned postal service Vietnam Post was targeted by a ransomware attack, rendering its website and application inaccessible starting Tuesday morning, according to the Vietnam News Agency.

The ransomware breached Vietnam Post’s system at 3:10 am on Tuesday, the firm said in an announcement at noon on the same day.

The attack is directly impacting activities related to postal delivery services, while postal finance, public administration, and goods distribution services are still operating normally.

Upon detecting the incident, Vietnam Post promptly activated response protocols in accordance with guidance from the Ministry of Information and Communications’ Authority of Information Security. 

This involved disconnecting the IT system to isolate the breach and protect data. 

As a result, websites under the ‘vnpost.vn’ domain and associated applications may experience temporary disruptions during the recovery process.

The corporation is working closely with relevant authorities and leading Vietnamese IT conglomerates to swiftly resolve the issue and mitigate its impact on customers.

By the end of March, the Authority of Information Security noted a significant increase in cyberattacks, particularly those involving ransomware, through cyber monitoring and surveillance.

Throughout the first quarter, around 13,000 ransomware-related incidents were detected across various information systems, including those of major Vietnamese enterprises like VNDIRECT Securities Corporation and PetroVietnam Oil Corporation.

Authorities advised agencies and businesses to bolster network security monitoring to swiftly identify cyberattack activities.
