Up to 200 European billionaires are scheduled to visit Ha Long Bay in Quang Ninh Province, northern Vietnam aboard superyachts in January to attend the Art For Climate Festival.
The event, held between January 13 and 19, is expected to gather more than 80,000 participants, according to an announcement posted on the Quang Ninh Portal on Monday.
The UNESCO-listed world heritage site was chosen as the festival’s venue for its iconic status, at a time when the bay’s ecosystem is under threat from climate change and human activities.
Addressing a ceremony held on September 16 in Hanoi to announce the festival, Ambassador of France to Vietnam Olivier Brochet highlighted its goal of raising awareness about heritage conservation and environmental protection in response to current global challenges.
Ha Long Bay is a popular destination for international visitors to Vietnam, offering the cruising experience through its stunning waters.
In the first nine months of the year, the provincial city of Ha Long welcomed 9.2 million visitors.
The number of international visitors accounted for 2.13 million, marking a 2.3-fold increase against the same period last year.
The city booked approximately VND20.3 trillion (US$813.9 million) in tourism revenue.
Currently, Ha Long serves between 4,000 and 6,000 tourists daily, with 90 percent of them being international visitors.
Most tourism activities in Ha Long Bay have returned to normal after being disrupted by super typhoon Yagi, which devastated many parts of Quang Ninh and other northern Vietnamese localities upon its landfall in early September.
While summer is the peak tourist season in Ha Long, the city is now working to attract visitors during the winter months, including enhancing the efficiency of its tourism and transportation infrastructure, particularly for cruise passengers arriving via Ha Long International Cruise Port.
The management authority of Ha Long Bay has surveyed untouched islands and pristine beaches to develop unique and high-end tourism products for luxury travelers, amid a growing number of billionaires opting to visit Ha Long.
