Honda Vietnam, a subsidiary of Japanese vehicle maker Honda, has recently announced its campaign to recall a total of 11,005 CR-V, Civic and Civic Type-R vehicles across Vietnam for repair of steering racks.

The recall campaign will be applied for 7,104 CR-V, 3,870 Civic and 31 Civic Type-R cars, the Vinh Phuc Province-based company announced on Wednesday.

Among the total 11,005 vehicles, the CR-Vs, with origin of Vietnam and Thailand, were manufactured between September 18, 2023 and September 25, 2024; the Civics, originating from Thailand, were made from November 3, 2021 to November 17, 2023, and the Civic Type-Rs, with origin of Japan, were produced between January 10, 2023 and July 5, 2024, the Voice of Vietnam reported.

For vehicles subject to the recall, the amount of lubricating grease in the steering rack worm gear may gradually decrease during use, resulting in increased friction and causing sticking problems.

This steering rack error may cause unusual noise or vibration when steering, but to date there have been no reported cases of safety issues.

However, Honda Vietnam, for safety reasons, recommends that all owners of cars subject to the recall should bring their vehicles to Honda’s official dealers nationwide to have the steering rack examined and replaced starting next month.

Estimated repair time is expected from half an hour to four hours per vehicle, depending on its model, and the firm will bear the cost of inspection and replacement.

Honda Vietnam said it will notify each customer of the recall campaign in detail via letter, email or phone.

The steering rack plays a vital role in the control system, according to experts in the automotive industry.

If this part malfunctions, driving can become difficult and dangerous, especially when the vehicle is moving at high speeds or in emergency situations.

Currently, Honda CR-V is one of Honda’s key car models in Vietnam, with 5,758 units sold last year and 4,218 another traded over the first nine months of 2024, ranking second in the C-size CUV (crossover utility vehicle) segment, only after its competitors Mazda CX5 and Ford Territory.

In the past, some Honda Civic cars in Vietnam also encountered similar problems.

Not only in Vietnam, Honda has once launched similar automobile recalls in international markets, such as the U.S and Malaysia, where the company has recalled nearly 1.7 million and 36,000 vehicles, respectively.
